Frequently Asked Questions
Can online psychotherapy for anxiety and disorders really be just as effective as in-person sessions?
Absolutely! At PrivateSpace Psychotherapy, I use state-of-the-art online tools to ensure a secure and effective therapy session. In fact, many patients appreciate the flexibility and comfort of being able to take part from their own private space. This can be especially helpful if you live abroad and are looking for the comfort of therapy in German. And do not worry, the quality of care remains just as high as with in-person sessions.
I constantly feel stressed and am not sure whether I have burnout. Isn’t it an overreaction to seek psychotherapy right away?
It is always better to act preventively, especially when it comes to your mental health. Burnout and stress can, if left untreated, lead to serious mental health conditions. At PrivateSpace Psychotherapy, I offer a compassionate and competent assessment of your situation. And if you think that an online format might feel too distant: many of my clients report that they actually feel more comfortable and open in the familiar surroundings of their own home.
I have been through some difficult periods and am wondering whether I suffer from depression. But I live abroad – can PrivateSpace Psychotherapy really help me?
Yes, that is exactly what PrivateSpace Psychotherapy is there for! I know how challenging it can be for Germans living abroad when they do not have access to the medical services they are used to. I have lived abroad myself and bring not only professional expertise, but also intercultural experience. I understand your challenges and can offer targeted, individually tailored therapy – no matter where in the world you are.

pain
Have you experienced severe psychological distress in your life or a traumatic event that you simply cannot shake off? Whether it is an accident, loss, emotional neglect, or recurring fears – EMDR is an evidence-based method that specifically helps in processing these distressing experiences.
At PrivateSpace Psychotherapy, you have access to this effective method – online, location-independent, and in German. Especially as a German living abroad, it is crucial to find therapy that understands you professionally and meets you in your own language.
EMDR therapy does not mean confrontation, but targeted processing. In a safe and professionally guided setting, we support you in gently resolving emotional blockages – for greater quality of life, emotional stability, and inner freedom.
We distinguish between healthy anxiety that protects us from danger and exaggerated, inappropriate anxiety. The latter occurs even though there is no real danger or threat, or the danger is nowhere near as great as assumed. Such anxiety increasingly leads to severe limitations in one or more areas of life. Many people experience fears about the future or intimacy. Others are significantly restricted in their lives and freedom of movement because they are afraid of driving or using public transportation. Still others cannot stop worrying, which eventually keeps them awake at night. Such fears can continue to spread and thus affect our well-being and personal satisfaction. Even when these fears make us increasingly unhappy and we are aware of it, there comes a point when we can no longer stop them on our own. At PrivateSpace, I offer both proven treatment methods and approaches tailored specifically to you. Together, we will find a way out of the dead end.
Burnout is also referred to as burnout syndrome. The term comes from English and means being “burned out.” The social and economic developments of recent decades, characterized above all by globalization and digitalization, have led to ever-increasing pressure in the workplace. We constantly work up to and beyond our personal limits. Other drivers of burnout include personal traits such as perfectionism, high expectations of one’s own performance, a strong willingness to sacrifice, and, as stress increases, growing self-doubt. Balance for these high demands is being neglected more and more often, leisure activities are reduced, breaks are no longer taken, we can no longer relax and eventually cannot sleep, and we adopt an increasingly unhealthy lifestyle. At PrivateSpace, I offer both proven treatment methods and approaches tailored specifically to you. Together, we will find a way out of burnout and back into balance.
Some of the most noticeable symptoms of depression include a low mood and reduced emotional responsiveness, lack of drive, and the inability to feel pleasure or interest in everyday or leisure activities. Carrying out even the simplest tasks becomes increasingly difficult until it is no longer possible at all, and we withdraw more and more. Feelings of hopelessness, diffuse anxiety, worries, or brooding thoughts may also arise and keep us from getting restful sleep. Waking during the night or early in the morning increasingly begins to torment us and leads to considerable exhaustion and daytime fatigue. Appetite may change: some people have less appetite and lose weight, while others tend toward excessive and uncontrolled eating and gain significant weight. Difficulties with concentration and forgetfulness may also occur. Self-esteem can suffer greatly as well; we may feel worthless or inferior, put ourselves down, or struggle with inappropriate feelings of guilt. Physical symptoms such as back or joint pain may also accompany depression, even when no organic explanation can be found. At PrivateSpace, I offer both proven treatment methods and approaches tailored specifically to you in order to counter this negative downward spiral and bring light back into the darkness.
We speak of trauma when a person has survived an exceptional situation in which their own life or that of another person was threatened or in danger, and they felt completely helpless and defenseless in the face of it. Such extreme situations can include acts of violence, wars, natural disasters, or rape, but also traffic accidents. About half of rape victims, for example, develop post-traumatic stress disorder. Typical symptoms after trauma include severe anxiety and terror, being easily startled, avoiding anything that might remind one of the threatening situation, nightmares, frequent and vivid recollections of what happened – often triggered by so-called triggers – almost as if it were happening again in that moment, loss of trust, and emotional numbness. At PrivateSpace, I offer both proven treatment methods and approaches tailored specifically to you for all kinds of trauma-related disorders, in order to support you in processing what you have experienced and taking control of your life again.
pain
Psychosomatic disorders are diagnosed when medical findings cannot, or can only insufficiently, explain symptoms such as digestive problems, breathing difficulties, chronic pain, heart-related complaints, or tinnitus, and it must be assumed that both somatic (organic) and psychological causes are present, influencing the course and severity of the symptoms. Such psychological factors include emotional strain, stress, or life crises. Before receiving a psychosomatic assessment of their symptoms, however, those affected have usually already endured a long period of suffering. During specialist evaluations, they often repeatedly hear that “no cause for the symptoms can be found,” or even statements such as “you are healthy” or “it is psychological” (sometimes treated as synonymous with “imagined”). As a last resort, painkillers are then often taken, which can lead to side effects, worsening pain, and sometimes even dependence on medication. This often results in the development of further mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety disorders. A psychosomatic assessment often takes place far too late, even though suitable psychotherapeutic measures can relieve the symptoms. Better pain management can reduce the need for medication and improve tolerance of the symptoms.
At PrivateSpace, I offer exactly that: support with better pain management so that you can learn a different way of coping with your symptoms.
If addictive substances such as alcohol or drugs have a positive effect on you because, for example, they help reduce your nervousness or simply allow you to forget your worries for a while, then over time use can also develop into misuse and, in the worst case, dependence. The consumption of the substance becomes uncontrollable and, as time goes on, has very negative effects on you, your personal and professional environment, and your entire life. At PrivateSpace Psychotherapy, I offer both proven and highly individualized support for people who have decided to live abstinently.
This is a disorder characterized by the repeated intrusion of unwanted, usually unpleasant images and thoughts – usually experienced as irrational – (obsessive thoughts) that torment the person. No matter how hard those affected try, they are unable to permanently suppress these thoughts and images. As a result, visible or mental rituals (compulsive behaviors) are developed and repeatedly carried out in a stereotyped way in order to reduce the intense anxiety triggered by the obsessive thoughts. These compulsive rituals take up a great deal of time and have a very restrictive impact on the lives of those affected. These rituals are often associated with a great deal of shame. There are many different types of compulsions; the most common are washing, ordering, and checking compulsions, and different compulsions often occur at the same time or one after another. At PrivateSpace Psychotherapy, I offer both proven treatment methods and approaches tailored specifically to you in order to help you overcome obsessive-compulsive disorder.
PrivateSpace also offers coaching. Unlike psychotherapy, coaching is a structured and solution-oriented form of support for current obstacles that may affect your life and limit your personal development, but do not constitute a mental health condition requiring treatment. Topics may include challenges in the workplace or those arising from certain personality traits, such as perfectionism, excessive conscientiousness, difficulty setting boundaries, or an inability to relax. Decision-making and change management, as well as improvements in time management, can also be addressed.
